Resumen

Los estudios tradicionales de tecnología en arqueología tuvieron como presupuesto básico que las variaciones observadas en la cultura material se debían a restricciones funcionales y de materia prima. Aunque esto es parcialmente cierto, las investigaciones y los desarrollos teóricos de las dos últimas décadas sobre cultura material muestran con claridad que la mayor parte de las causas de variabilidad de la cultura material se encuentran en la dinámica social, en la interfase entre el concepto y su objetivación material, interfase que da foma al comportamiento humano puesto que a través de ella se realizan, simultáneamente, objetos, relaciones sociales y sentidos (véase Dobres y Hoffman 1994 para una buena síntesis de esta postura). Así consideradas, es evidente que las escogencias técnicas que se realizan en un proceso tecnológico se establecen, muchas veces, por criterios que no responden a necesidades funcionales. Lemonnier (1986, 1993), por ejemplo, ha mostrado cómo la utilización de determinadas opciones tecnológicas no significa desconocimiento de otras opciones funcionalmente equivalentes -lo que Sackett (1982) llamó “opciones isocrésticas” - sino escogencias conscientes que pueden, en muchos casos, marcar identidad y, simultáneamente, distancias sociales. Así, aunque ciertas escogencias puedan parecer arbitrarias, los fenómenos tecnológicos no ocurren al azar y están estructurados por un orden social, no necesariamente técnico (Lemonnier 1986: 179).
