Uno de los puntos cruciales para entender la dinámica de la formación de los cacicazgos e incluso la evolución de los estados gira en torno al papel que pudo tener la centralización en dicho proceso. En la teoría general de cacicazgos se puede distinguir un denominador común en los diferentes planteamientos más aceptados y discutidos. En ellos, la centralización es un elemento esencial en la formación y funcionamiento de los cacicazgos.
