Abstract

Recent archaeological research has confirmed the use of gold in early times in the northern coast of the Esmeraldas province (Ecuador). Finds on formative levels of the site Las Balsas, near the ceremonial center of La Tolita, include perforated sheets joined with metallic hooks or vegetable threads.The C14 dates obtained from these levels place the first settlement between 915 and 780 b.C. This is the earliest recorded use of metals in the region, and represents the axis of the La Tolita-Tumaco metallurgical tradition. The hammering and open work techniques have been verified with a scanning electron microscope, and the main and secondary elements have been identified, thus allowing a comparison with samples of the alluvial gold of the region.
}, number={53}, journal={Boletín Museo del Oro}, author={Valdez, Francisco and Gratuze, Bernard and Yépez, Alexandra and Hurtado, Julio}, year={2005}, month={dic.}, pages={1–9} }
