Abstract

In the peasant symbolism of the Colombian Andes, the idea of “enchantment”, as far as pre-Hispanic gold and indigenous matters are concerned, refers to the powers of the indians at the time of the Spanish Conquest that are to be found in lakes, rivers and mountains, where they took refuge with their gold. Those pre-Hispanic Indians are still with us today, but in an underground, gold world, notably on hills and in areas around lakes, which they protect. The “Mohan”, an individual, isolated, anthropomorphous character who rises to the surface out of the depths and then suddenly disappears again, has all the features of an Indian shaman. The way that enchantments and Mohans come into contact with the present population is rather like the idea of relations between different ethnic groups: a people from the past who live in the underworld, powerful yet defeated, maintains links with another group of people who live on the surface and who believe that their underworld counterparts adopt an ambivalent attitude of aggression and protection towards them.
ER -
